22.05.2006. - The celebration of the International Day For Biological Diversity
International Day For Biological Diversity was declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1993. Firstly, it was celebrated on the 29th December, the very day when the Convention On Biological Diversity took effect, but due to the excess amount of holidays at that time of the year, which caused certain organizational problems, the date was shifted to the 22th May, the day when the final text of the convention was made.
Biodiversity is one of the most important world's resources, therefore throughout the world various measures are being carried out for its conservation. The Republic of Croatia is also one of the signatories of the Convention, and the 22nd May is declared to be the Nature Protection Day in the Republic of Croatia.

The Northern Velebit National Park also treasures high abundance of plant, animal and fungi species, as well as the great richness of various habitat types. That is, moreover, one of the reasons why it's been declared the national park! In order to properly celebrate and mark the above stated dates, the Public Institutions organizes a variety of activities - we would be honoured if you would join us!!! |
